Hi, I’m Ian…

A photographer based in Vancouver, Canada, originally from Medicine Hat. Most of my work is about everyday places. I’m drawn to how communities grow and change, and how those shifts shape the spaces we move through. Lately, I’ve been working on long-term projects focused on suburban change in Vancouver and rural spaces in Alberta, exploring the contrasts and connections between them.

In my series “Near Oblivion”, I am exploring how the suburban landscapes are designed to project ideas of access and opportunity, yet often reveal a different reality. Infrastructure looms above and around us, directing attention outward while quietly reinforcing boundaries and limits. Forms that suggest openness and progress often mask barriers or restrictions. In this way, the city becomes less a place of lived freedom and more a system of managed possibilities, where the promise of choice is presented but rarely delivered in full.

My original long-term project “Palliser’s Triangle” explores the history of southeastern Alberta. Once described as barren and uninhabitable by John Palliser in the 1850s, the land has since been reshaped through agriculture, settlement, and recurring cycles of drought and resilience. My photographs focus on prairie stretches that carry the tension between survival and adaptation, where freedom is found less in choice and more in space, stillness, and the endurance of a landscape shaped over generations.
